True War Tales

Type: Website

Code: Next.js, React, Typescript, Express.js

Status: Launched

I’ve always enjoyed books about military history and real war experiences, stories about courage, survival, and the people behind the headlines. However, finding good books was never easy and often I found myself spending more time searching for good war books than actually reading them.

Most book sites list whatever’s popular, not necessarily what’s meaningful. If I wanted to read something specific, like a book about helicopter pilots in Vietnam or submarine crews during World War II, I’d end up digging through dozens of unrelated titles. After doing this for a while, I figured — why not just build something better? That’s how truewartales.com started.

The idea was simple: create a place where you can easily find good war books based on what actually interests you — whether that’s a specific war or conflict, a military branch or unit, or even a subject like airplanes, tanks, or special forces.

In the beginning there was only database powered by scripts that were fetching book data from various APIs. Then over time I began building a proper backend using Express.js, which handles all the logic for fetching and structuring book data and the frontend which uses Next.js, React and Typescript. While the project is far from finished, I feel like it’s ready to be used by the public. Do you have suggestions for new features or a comment? Let me know in the comments section below 😊
